Ludum Dare Page

Yay! This is a total of three Ludum Dares for me now. Out of all of them, this is definitely the one I am most proud of.

One commenter described the setting as like a “small zoo where all the animals talk to each other”. That is a much better idea than any that I had, I’ll run with it :P

I have some things in mind of what I would like to do for a post-compo version, but I’ve not had a good track record with going back to projects after I’ve declared them ‘finished’. I would like to see this game made better but no promises.

Anyway, give it a go, and I would love to hear your feedback :)

BVGR: Bastion

April 1st, 2012 § permalink

Hi. I’m going to start writing about some of the games I’ve played. I will call them ‘BVGR’, or ‘belated video game reviews’ because I’m always playing games like 5 months after they’re released. These aren’t really reviews technically, but more like a note on games that I’ve played as finish each one. Anyway, on to Bastion!

From what I’ve seen, the main thing that comes up in discussions about this game is the narrator. So I’m not going to talk about that! (Okay, I lied, I’m still going to talk about it)

I just keep thinking about Kingdom Hearts

I didn't have enough foresight to take any action shots, so this is all you're gonna get. Whatever. This is Bastion! It's quite pretty.

Bastion, overall, I found to be a pretty average game… what it does it does well, but nothing more. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing because most games are really shit at everything.

The weapons system was pretty well designed. You can carry any two weapons on your person, and you can swap out for a different set whenever you are at an armoury (of which there is one at the home base of the Bastion, and a number of them scattered around the world).

From what I could tell, each one of the eleven weapons could be short, medium, or long range (or any combination of those). For example, one weapon, the brushers pike, had a basic medium range stab attack, and a long range throw attack when you held down the mouse button. Other weapons, like the fire bellows and the scrap musket were best in short to medium range. This worked really well for weapon combinations! You could pick your favourite weapon, and then if, say, that weapon doesn’t cover mid range attacks, then you could choose your second to account for that. It actually felt like I was free to choose whatever I wanted to, and I wouldn’t be punished for it by having my life made harder.

I must admit, my favourite thing about the game was the scrap musket. I’m so used to the guns that most games have. Most games have guns that go ‘POK-POK-POK’. The scrap musket  goes pSHAWAAWSASH and that is awesome! This thing felt proper good, that little bit of knock-back you get from it was just right, it felt real and physical; something that really needs to be in more games!

For that same reason though I can’t tell you anything much about the rest of the weapons because as soon as I got the scrap musket I didn’t use anything else :|

Okay, I wanted to make this mostly about the weapons but I will talk a bit about the narrator here, because I think it’s worth mentioning.

To me, the narrator served the same purpose as what a companion character (you know, like Alyx Vance) would. They just did a really good job of it.

If I recall correctly, the main complaints about companion characters are:

1. Hopeless A.I. that gets in your way
2. Annoying, ass-patt like dialogue
3. Repetitive dialogue
4. Repetitive dialogue

Bastion’s narrator does none of these things. I don’t think you need to have a character take the form of a narrator in order to avoid those pitfalls, but it’s certainly one way to prevent a lot of bad design.

Anyway! That was that. I think I’ll try and do some writing whenever I finish an interesting game, it certainly helps me think a bit more about things then I usually do. Hopefully this one turned out okay! Tell me what you think, I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on Bastion :D

I fail at blogging

March 3rd, 2012 § permalink

I keep forgetting that I can blog about things.

You know, sometimes I see things, and sometimes I have opinions on them. But I forget. And then when I do remember I get so caught up in trying to make my post perfect that I never actually post it!

So I’m going to force myself to post this right now. So I can realise that it’s okay to post short blogs (so long as they are longer then 140 characters, I guess).

I thought once about doing monthly updates, actually. That would be a motivation to blog more, but It might end up just depressing me as I find that I’ve done nothing at all in a month. Or maybe that’s a good thing, maybe that’s something I need to see.

But then it sure would be mighty embarrassing if it ends up like I see so often:
Brand new update schedule! Weekly posts!

PIRATE KART

March 1st, 2012 § permalink

Here, have some games:

Bunny Murder Game

Took me about 5 hours? Maybe? I’m not sure. I used a lot of code that I had been working on previously too.

Very Boring Physics Game

Does what it says on the tin! It (shamefully) took me about 4 hours.

Interactive Fiction in which You are a Lizard

I’m pretty happy with this one man! I made it with twine, so you can play it in your browser real easy like. Took me just a few minutes over 2 hours!

I made them for the GDC pirate kart last weekend. You can play everyone’s awesome games here: Glorious Trainwrecks!

2011 GAME

December 31st, 2011 § permalink

So now, at 10:09 with about 2 hours left in the year my 2011 new-years-game has been uploaded.

The idea was to remake a bunch of popular 2-player games for one player and package them together. Unfortunately I hit a roadblock rather quickly as I realised that I could only think of one popular multiplayer game.

So here it is, my (very unspectacular) one player version of pong: Play!

When you want to switch paddles hit the left mouse button, and then type the letter displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Originally I had it so it wasn’t a challenge to change sides, but I found it to be too easy and a bit boring. So then I add the typing thing to make it a bit more hectic. I find it hard to score more then 6 or 7 :)

Due to not being able to think of any more simple two player computer games, I also started on a version of checkers. Didn’t manage to finish that one though, and I’m not sure how I’d make it more interesting anyway.

Regardless, it was good practise overall and a fun project.

Happy new year everyone! It’s nice to be over and done with a game within a day or so.

1 More day of 2011

December 31st, 2011 § permalink

And I’m not going to waste it!

I’m not ready to write a yearly wrap up yet. I’ve still got time, so in order to make my 2011 seem ever so slightly less pathetic, I’m going to make one more game!

So I started on the 29th. I’m going to make the LD22 game that I didn’t make during LD22. Wish me luck :D

Ludum Dare 22: Alone

December 25th, 2011 § permalink

I made a game again :D

You can play it here: “Don’t Make Eye Contact”

Blog posts:
Pre-Ludum dare
Day 1
Day 2

Once again I had a really fun time over the weekend. 891 games made is absolutely amazing! The theme was not my favourite. I did have a good idea, but it happened after I had started ‘Don’t Make Eye Contact’(typical).

As for the dog game(mentioned in the first post), I’m not sure where it is headed. I fear I don’t have the experience or skill to pull off what I wanted to do story wise, but I do have another idea that might work better. I’d like to keep working on it. We’ll see what happens I guess.

P.S: Kittens.

What I’ve been doing

December 20th, 2011 § permalink

Pretend that there's no crosshair.

Taken on a mountain outside of Whiterun.
Things of note:
Throat of the World in the distance
High Hrothgar is visible (just to the right of Sir Flugginton’s head)
My super awesome glass bow
Sir Fluffington solemnly stares into the distance, for some reason

While I was taking this a snowstorm started, and I couldn’t see Throat of the World any more. I had to wait for it to clear. A deer also ran past at one point. This is why people love Skyrim!

Small tweaks

September 23rd, 2011 § permalink

Just made some small tweaks to the website.

It now has a header that I spent more them 2 minutes on and that I didn’t use MS paint to make.

Plus I’m enjoying playing with the model I made for it.

I made game?!!?!

August 26th, 2011 § permalink

Ludum dare is awesome!
The theme this time around was ‘escape’. You can play my game here:
We’d like it if you Stay

We'd like it if you stay

This was my first LD, and I’m much happier with this game then I was with my GPC game.
There’s not really much to say that I haven’t already said on the LD website, so, here are some links to those if you want to read more:

First blog post
Jam progress
We’d like it if you stay, Done!
We’d like it if you stay, postmortem

So, what next?

I know I haven’t updated this blog in a long time. There are a number of things I’ve been working on… probably the most time consuming of which is one I have mentioned here before, a game I’ve dubbed ‘rabbit game’, as it features…rabbits. Rabbit game hasn’t really been working out. It hurts me to say I’ve given up on it, seeing as I’ve spend so long with it… so, I’m not going to say that. I don’t like hurt.

Recently I’ve been playing with some other things… I’m not sure what will happen. But I never seem to finish anything like this, do I?
