Hi. I’m going to start writing about some of the games I’ve played. I will call them ‘BVGR’, or ‘belated video game reviews’ because I’m always playing games like 5 months after they’re released. These aren’t really reviews technically, but more like a note on games that I’ve played as finish each one. Anyway, on to Bastion!
From what I’ve seen, the main thing that comes up in discussions about this game is the narrator. So I’m not going to talk about that! (Okay, I lied, I’m still going to talk about it)

I didn't have enough foresight to take any action shots, so this is all you're gonna get. Whatever. This is Bastion! It's quite pretty.
Bastion, overall, I found to be a pretty average game… what it does it does well, but nothing more. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing because most games are really shit at everything.
The weapons system was pretty well designed. You can carry any two weapons on your person, and you can swap out for a different set whenever you are at an armoury (of which there is one at the home base of the Bastion, and a number of them scattered around the world).
From what I could tell, each one of the eleven weapons could be short, medium, or long range (or any combination of those). For example, one weapon, the brushers pike, had a basic medium range stab attack, and a long range throw attack when you held down the mouse button. Other weapons, like the fire bellows and the scrap musket were best in short to medium range. This worked really well for weapon combinations! You could pick your favourite weapon, and then if, say, that weapon doesn’t cover mid range attacks, then you could choose your second to account for that. It actually felt like I was free to choose whatever I wanted to, and I wouldn’t be punished for it by having my life made harder.
I must admit, my favourite thing about the game was the scrap musket. I’m so used to the guns that most games have. Most games have guns that go ‘POK-POK-POK’. The scrap musket goes pSHAWAAWSASH and that is awesome! This thing felt proper good, that little bit of knock-back you get from it was just right, it felt real and physical; something that really needs to be in more games!
For that same reason though I can’t tell you anything much about the rest of the weapons because as soon as I got the scrap musket I didn’t use anything else
Okay, I wanted to make this mostly about the weapons but I will talk a bit about the narrator here, because I think it’s worth mentioning.
To me, the narrator served the same purpose as what a companion character (you know, like Alyx Vance) would. They just did a really good job of it.
If I recall correctly, the main complaints about companion characters are:
1. Hopeless A.I. that gets in your way
2. Annoying, ass-patt like dialogue
3. Repetitive dialogue
4. Repetitive dialogue
Bastion’s narrator does none of these things. I don’t think you need to have a character take the form of a narrator in order to avoid those pitfalls, but it’s certainly one way to prevent a lot of bad design.
Anyway! That was that. I think I’ll try and do some writing whenever I finish an interesting game, it certainly helps me think a bit more about things then I usually do. Hopefully this one turned out okay! Tell me what you think, I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on Bastion
